RMT to vote on strike action over Virgin East Coast staff sacking

Virgin East Coast trains will ballot members on whether to strike Credit: ITV News Central

Virgin East Coast Train employees are to vote on whether to strike over the sacking of a colleague, the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) announced today.

More than 1400 members will be balloted after a worker was dismissed from his job in Edinburgh by the company over a Kindle which went missing from a train he was working on.

The union claim that the disciplinary process was 'deeply compromised' and argued that CCTV evidence was 'inconclusive', among other objections.

The RMT will distribute voting papers to all those in the company working in onboard catering, guards, station and ticket office grades next Monday. The ballot will close on the 27th October.

ITV News Central contacted Virgin Trains regarding the decision, who said they were 'disappointed' by the news and did not believe strike action was needed.
