An exhibition telling the stories of Nottingham’s very first immigrants from the Caribbean is to be displayed during Older People’s Week.

‘From Caribbean Isles to the British Isles: Home to Home’ displays the personal items bought to the UK by Caribbean immigrants arriving for the first time during the Windrush Era.

After the Second World War people from the Caribbean responded to adverts to work in the UK. Each person travelling to the UK was restricted to one suitcase per person during the sea voyage.

The items in the exhibition are displayed in vintage suitcases and range from ornaments to sentimental photographs and books.

Also on exhibit are the quintessentially British items that Caribbeans chose to send home to their family and friends.
