Birmingham hit-and-run victim was widow and grandmother of ten
The victim of a hit-and-run driver in Birmingham was a widow who had been “mother and father” to her three children, her family say.
Zainab Bibi, a grandmother of ten, had devoted her life to her family after being widowed 41 years ago.
Last night, her family spoke for the first time of their love for her and described how she had brought up three children on her own.
The accident happened at 2pm on Tuesday, July 14, outside Christ Church on Burney Lane in Alum Rock.
Mrs Bibi, aged 68 was struck by a white Fiat which failed to stop. She sustained multiple injuries and was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.
Doctors lost their battle to save her three hours later.
The Fiat was later found abandoned with front end damage and a shattered windscreen in Old Moat Way in Ward End.
Mrs Bibi's family have set up a petition asking for experts to look at installing traffic calming measures along Burney Lane.
They have suggested that the stretch where their mother was hit could be turned into a dual-carriageway with a fixed barrier, encouraging pedestrians to use the crossing.
A West Midlands Police said a 15-year-old had been arrested on suspicion of causing Mrs Bibi’s death by dangerous driving following an appeal for information. He has been bailed until November.
Anyone with further information on the accident is encouraged to contact the police.
