ITV began broadcasting in September 1955 and in May 1956 came the first edition of ATV Midlands News.

The bulletin covered the whole of the Midlands, from the top story of the day to some of the more unusual stories!

ATV Today followed in 1964, before the introduction of Central News in 1982. A dedicated programme for the East Midlands followed two years later.

In January 1982 ATV became Central Television, with West Midlands productions coming from our massive studios off Broad Street in Birmingham.

In 1984 a dedicated East Midlands service launched, at first from studios at Daybrook in Nottingham, then into Central's Lenton Lane studios.

Over the years, we've covered the region's biggest stories, responding to breaking news and hearing from the people who make the Midlands what it is.

We've never shied away from telling the more quirkier stories - and we've got a great archive of outtakes!

We'll be celebrating tonight ITV News Central at 6pm so tune in to see more from our archive.
