US news channel Fox News has been rapped by Ofcom for its delay in correcting a comment describing Birmingham as a 'totally Muslim city'.

The US news network broadcast so-called terrorism expert Steven Emerson's comments in January in which he said:

Watch: The moment Birmingham described as a 'totally Muslim city'

Today Ofcom said the claims made on the Justice with Judge Jeanine show were "clearly misleading" and in breach of the broadcasting code.

In its report today the media regulator added:

Steven Emerson's comments following Paris terror attacks sparked the #FoxNewsFacts hashtag and was mocked by many of social media.

No immediate correction was made by Fox News which, 7 days later, admitted it had made a "serious factual error” and that it had“wrongly let stand unchallenged and uncorrected”.

Emerrson himself apologised for the comments the day after the show, insisting he thought Birmingham was "beautiful."
