Teenagers across the country are getting ready to head off to university, but for many it will be the first time they have had to take on household chores.

Many young adults will be starting to lead a more independent life, but it can be a steep learning curve, both educationally and when it comes to acquiring certain life skills.

Laundry product company ACE Gentle has put together its top tips for successful laundering.

  • Read the labels to prevent disasters - Check the care instructions on the garment’s label

  • Separate clothes - don't turn those whites pink, separate into categories, whites, brights, darks and delicates

  • Pre-treat stubborn stains - tricky stains can be removed if dealt with promptly and properly

  • Keep clothes looking good for longer - jeans lose less dye and wool items are less likely to go bobbly when washed inside out

  • Dry laundry properly - hang clean clothes up immediately and allow them to dry and air adequately
