A man from Nottingham drowned during a holiday in Lanzarote when he attempted to save two swimmers in distress, an inquest has heard.

Delivery driver Anthony Miller was visiting the island last June when hespotted a father and daughter struggling in the water at Costa Teguise.

The pair survived after being rescued but Mr Miller, from Bulwell, Nottingham, was found drowned. Coroner Maria Mulrennan called the incident a "tragic loss".

An inquest into the 41-year-old's death at Nottingham Coroner's Court heard he was on holiday with his partner Sue Marriott and her 13-year-old son Bailey last June.

They were on the beach at Las Cucharas when Mr Miller rushed in the sea to attempt the rescue but got into difficulty in the strong currents.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene but was pronounced dead at just before 1pm on June 10 last year.

Sister Jayne Miller told the court she had received emails from other holidaymakers and the paramedic who treated him telling her what had happened.

Ms Mulrennan read out a post-mortem which gave the cause of death as anoxia of vital organs and asphyxiation of the sea.

Concluding the death was an accident, she said:

Speaking after the inquest, Mr Miller's sister Jayne said her reaction to news of her brother's death was "shock".
