An armed robber has been jailed for three years after attempting to rob his local supermarket - without wearing any sort of disguise.

Imran Chughtai armed himself for the attempted robbery at his local Tesco Express, but didn’t wear anything to conceal his identity.

When it sank in that he had been “promptly recognised, Chughtai turned himself in to police.

He has now been jailed for three years after admitting to robbery and possessing an imitation firearm.

Benjamin Close, prosecuting at Birmingham Crown Court, said Chughtai struck just after 10pm on October 16 last year as two employees were cashing up at Tesco Express in Hall Green.

“He threw a screwed up Tesco bag on top of a till and said ‘Fill the bag up.’”

One of the workers swore at the defendant in a bid to deter him and tried to close the till but Chughtai managed to grab some notes amounting to around £200.

Both employees then took hold of the defendant’s arms but he managed to break free and pointed the stun gun at one of them which looked like a torch. He then fled from the store.
