England Women were knocked out of the Women's World Cup in the cruellest of ways after scoring an own goal in stoppage time.

They were 1-1 against Japan as they went into injury time, with the match looking likely to head to extra time.

But an own goal from Nuneaton's Laura Bassett put the reigning world champions a goal up with seconds to go.

Notts County defender Bassett broke down into tears after the final whistle, before being comforted by teammates and manager Mark Sampson.

It was the first time any England side had reached a semifinal in a football World Cup since the men's team in Italia 1990.
