It has been a wet and windy start to the meteorological summer, but exactly 40 years ago the situation was much worse!

On June 2nd, 1975, snow forced several county cricket matches to be abandoned, including Derbyshire versus Lancashire at Buxton.

Scattered sleet and snow showers were reported in the Midlands, East Anglia and even as far south as London. It was the first time since 1888 that snow and sleet had been reported so far south during the summer.

Snow settled on the Lickey Hills, and other areas just south of Birmingham.

Snow in June is very rare in the Midlands, but ten years later Mother Nature defied the odds again.

On June 7, 1985, a sleet shower fell on Birmingham Airport.

There were a few flurries in June 2009 as well, but not on the scale of 1975.
