'Biggest ever alteration' to Coventry ring road opens
A new £14.9 million bridge deck on the Coventry Ring Road will opens today, 15 months after initial demolition work took place.
The 100m bridge has replaced the old roundabout at junction 6 and is the biggest alteration to the ring road since it was built 40 years ago.
The new roads will be officially opened two days ahead of the MotoFest event, as invited guests, including members of the construction team who worked on the project, board an old corporation bus to become the first vehicle to drive down the newly created Warwick Road.
As well as completely revising the road layout, which includes realigning Warwick Road back onto its old historic route, the deck also now features wide open landscaped areas which link into Greyfriars Green, alongside a new wider, clearer pedestrian boulevard directly linking the railway station to the city centre at Bull Yard.
Cllr Rachel Lancaster, Cabinet Member for Public Services said:
The opening of the new bridge deck marks the first stage in the wider Friargate development adjacent to Coventry Railway Station, which will be home to the new Coventry City Council building.
