Derby Cathedral is opening to the public today (Saturday) despite being in the middle of extensive redevelopment work costing £800,000.

Most of the work being done focuses on heating, lighting and wiring.

The cathedral is closed during the week but sermons are still taking place at the weekends.

Most of the money for the project came from the World War One Heritage fund.

Cannon Missioner the Reverend Dr Elizabeth Thompson Cannon said the current scaffolding structure was "like being in a chrysalis".

Work is expected to be completed by the end of August.
