Daughter got married in hospital so dying father could give her away

Mum-of-six, Sarah Atkins, cancelled her original wedding plans and said her vows to Matthew Brown, in Sandwell Hospital, on Tuesday, so that her dying dad could give her away.

Sarah's father, 78 year-old Barry, is battling pancreatic cancer and has recently been diagnosed with pneumonia. His dying wish was to be able to give his daughter away on her wedding day and his wish came true.

Teams at Sandwell Hospital Chaplaincy worked tirelessly to ensure that the service went ahead without any problems. Staff decorated the ward accordingly and Sarah was given a separate room by staff to get ready, while Matthew, a 41 year-old school caretaker, waited in a side room.

After the ceremony, Sarah said she was thankful to everyone within the unit who had worked so hard to make her wedding day one to remember.

Sarah, and her mum, Ann, were hoping to take Barry home so that he can spend his final days surrounded by loved-ones.
