VE Day anniversary commemorations where you are

May 8th 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of VE Day - the day in 1945 when the Second World War in Europe ended.

People across the country celebrated with a collective sigh of relief, as well as house and street parties.

On this year's anniversary, commemorations are taking place all over the Midlands, as people join together to mark the occasion.

EAST MIDLANDS:

  • NOTTINGHAMSHIRE: The council will hold a two-minute silence at 3pm, preceded by a short speech. A beacon will then be lit at 9.30pm on Friday at County Hall in West Bridgford.

  • LEICESTER: A two-minute silence will be held at 3pm on Friday, with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Armed Forces Memorial. A beacon will be lit in Town Hall Square at 9.30pm. On Saturday, a peal of bells will ring out from Leicester Cathedral, and on Sunday, prayers will be said during morning service.

  • DERBY: The bells will ring out at Derby Cathedral, from 11am on Friday.

  • SWADLINCOTE, DERBYS: A beacon will be lit in the shape of a V, in Eureka Park, at 9.30pm on Friday. A two-minute silence and a torch-lit procession will lead up to the beacon-lighting, with choir singing and air squadron drummers.

  • NORTHAMPTON: A service at All Saints' Church at 2pm on Friday, followed by a two-minute silence.

  • CORBY: A two-minute silence at 3pm on Friday in James Ashworth VC Square, marked by the firing of a maroon, with the flag at half mast. A wreath will then be laid at the War Memorial in Corby Old Village.

WEST MIDLANDS:

  • BIRMINGHAM: A family day of Second World War-themed activities on Centenary Square, with a street party and stage performances - Friday from midday.

  • COVENTRY: A wreath-laying ceremony in the Coventry Cathedral ruins, and two minute silence. All starts at 2.30pm on Friday.

  • WOLVERHAMPTON: A wreath-laying service of remembrance starting at 11.30am on Friday, at The Cenotaph on St Peter's Square.

  • WORCESTER: Small remembrance and wreath laying ceremony at the Regimental Stone at 11am on Friday at Gheluvelt Park.

  • HEREFORD: A beacon will be lit at The Shirehall at 9.30pm on Friday.
