A 38-year-old hospital worker is gearing up to tackle the London Marathonhaving lost half her body weight.

Liz Adey, from Redditch, Worcestershire, weighed 20.5st before she began an intensive fitness regime two years ago that saw her lose 10st over the period of a year.

One of the many positive effects of her drastic weight loss, Liz said, is theimprovement it has made to her asthma, a condition she first startedexperiencing when she was a baby, and which prompted her to take on the26.2-mile challenge in aid of Asthma UK.

Within a month of starting a fitness programme focussed around healthy eating and running, Liz lost a stone and set herself the challenge of taking part in a marathon to lose even more weight.

Dr Samantha Walker, director of research and policy at Asthma UK, said: "For some people, being overweight may lead to more asthma symptoms and mean their asthma is more difficult to manage.

"In these cases, as was the case for Liz, losing weight can help to easesymptoms. More research does need to be done to confirm the link between obesity and asthma symptoms, but even if it doesn't reduce symptoms, losing extra weight has so many other benefits."
