The government has announced it will not provide cash to help keep Thoresby colliery in Nottinghamshire open for a further three years.

It comes after UK Coal announced the region's last deep coal mine would close because it was no longer profitable.

Last September the government loaned the company £4 million so it could safely close down the pit, with MPs still to vote if more money could be made available to bail out the mine for a further three years.

However today that vote came, and they decided not to provide an extra £338 million to keep UK Coal's pits at Thoresby in Nottinghamshire andKellingley in North Yorkshire going for longer.
