Who was King Richard III?

On Sunday 22 March services begin ahead of the reburial of King Richard III four days later.

In the summer of 2012 the remains of the last English King to die in battle were found under a car park in Leicester.

The discovery of King Richard III's remains was a collaboration with the University of Leicester, the Richard III Society and Leicester City Council.

Who was King Richard III - the facts:

  • Born in Fotheringhay Castle in Northamptonshire on 02/10/1452.

  • He ruled for two years, between 1483 and 1485.

  • Richard was the great-great-grandchild of Edward III.

  • Richard led his army to Bosworth in Leicester in 1485 to face Henry Tudor.

  • The last English King to die in battle was killed at Bosworth Field on 22/08/1485 - this brought both the Plantagenet dynasty and the Wars of the Roses to an end.
