A burglar is back in jail after the GPS electronic tag he was forced to wear after his release placed him at the scene of seven break-ins.

Aron Thompson was tagged on 20 November 2013 after his release from prison.

But after five days he kicked his way into a house in Yardley to steal laptops and a TV, and in the first eight days of December he committed six more burglaries.

One of those included a recently widowed 81-year-old woman in Tyseley, where he stole Christmas presents and jewellery belonging to her late husband.

Thompson, from Geraldine Road in Hay Mills, Birmingham, wore the ankle tag throughout his spree, which provided Offender Managers with a daily map of his movements.

But the 26-year-old hadn’t banked on the GPS of the tag being so precise that it could pinpoint his position to within ten metres.

When police looked into the data, it showed him at each scene, and also directed them to where he’d stashed jewellery.

Thompson admitted seven counts of burglary at Birmingham Crown Court, and he was last week jailed for two years.

Tony Babington, from Upton Road in Stechford, denied burglary, but a jury found him guilty of joining Thompson on two of the burglaries.

He was jailed for three years. He was handed the mandatory three-year term for being a ‘third strike’ burglar.
