Woman 'scared to leave house' after homophobic attack

A young woman from Oakham in Rutland says she is living in fear, after a homophobic attack by two men left her battered and bruised.

23-year-old Kerry Byrnes was walking home after a night out in the town at about 1am in the early hours of Sunday morning when she heard two men behind her.

One of the men made a homophobic comment as she was walking down Burley Road. She says the next thing she remembered was being hit in the face - and the rest was a blur.

Kerry says the attack has psychologically hit her hard.

Police have begun an investigation into the assault, and are appealing for witnesses.

The men are described as white, in their 20s, and both are about 5ft 7 ins tall. One was wearing a hooded top and the other had spiky blonde hair.

Kerry says since the attack, she has had fantastic support from her family, friends and the community.
