Despite a fairly disappointing World Cup campaign for England, the Midlands can at least take some positives from Brazil. INRIX, a traffic information service, said that motorists in the Midlands left work the earliest to catch the all-important kick-off between England and Uruguay.

Before kick-off:

  • Traffic up 6% on normal between 4pm and 6pm

The result of passion and eagerness to get away from work for people in the Midlands meant there was more than a 5% increase in traffic between 4pm and 6pm, but after this time congestion levels dropped.

During the match:

  • Traffic down 10% on normal between 8pm and 10pm

The Midlands and South East were the regions that showed the most significant reduction in traffic during the England v Uruguay match.

After the final whistle:

  • Traffic down 15% on normal after 10pm

INRIX say Midlanders were much more inclined to watch the footy in their own homes, as opposed to down the pub or at a friend or family member's house.
