UKIP took three council seats on Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council overnight, taking one seat from the Conservatives and two from the Liberal Democrats.

Labour held seven seats and took two from the Conservatives.

The result leaves no one party in overall control of the council. With all results in, the new makeup of the council is: Labour - 30 (+2) Conservatives - 21 (-3) Lib Dem - 3 (-2) Independent - 3 UKIP - 3 (+3).

Married couple Liz Hazell and Darren Hazell both won seats for UKIP.

Council leader Mike Bird congratulated Nigel Farage's party, saying the night "belongs to UKIP, both in Walsall and elsewhere in the country."

But deputy Labour leader Shaun Coughlan ruled out any deal with UKIP. He said Labour would only consider agreements with parties who shared Labour values, and that "does not include UKIP."
