Police investigate homophobic robbery in Birmingham

Police have praised 'brave' passers-by who helped a man during a street robbery in what officers think was a homophobic attack in Birmingham's gay district.

CCTV operators caught a confrontation between two men outside The Village Inn bar on Hurst street in the early hours of this morning.

When officers arrived they found the suspect unconscious in the street and members of the public comforting the 22-year-old victim, who was then taken to hospital with cuts and bruises.

A 51-year-old man was also taken to hospital and subsequently arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and possession of an offensive weapon. He was later transferred to police custody where he continues to be held.

A large knife was seized from the scene and an investigation is now underway.
