Leicester University create a video featuring victims of hate crime

Shireen was abused at her local supermarket Credit: University of Leicester

Leicester University will distribute the film to local organisations, schools and community groups. Their aim is to show the damage caused by hate crime. Shireen was physically and verbally abused while she queued at a supermarket.

Another victim, Grant, has tried to commit suicide several times because of the abuse he's encountered.

The idea for the film came from the Leicester Hate Crime Project - a two year study, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, designed to examine the nature and impact of hate crime and victims' expectations of the criminal justice system and other support agencies.

The film highlights a number of themes including:

  • The range of people affected by hate incidents

  • The different forms of hate incidents can take

  • The impact it has on victims, families and the wider community

  • Advice these victims would offer others suffering similar experiences
