Platform controller at Leicester station retires after 50 years
After half a century of service, a well known face at Leicester Railway station has finally called it a day. After 53 years on the railways, Eddie Isaac has decided to hang up his whistle and baton, and retire.
Today passengers and staff gathered to say goodbye, as Eddie dispatched his last train from the platform.
Incredibly during his five and a bit decades on the railways, Eddie has never missed a day's work. He puts it down to his diet - including a raw egg in milk for breakfast. And his favourite part of the job? The customers of course!
To his colleagues at East Midlands Trains, it is his enthusiasm - particularly his whistling, singing and special sayings they'll miss most.
Over the years Eddie has also become something of a legend among his passengers. Today some of them paid tribute to his longevity.
During his time at work Eddie has won numerous rail, customer service, and punctuality awards. But in 2004 he received the ultimate accolade. An MBE presented to him by the Queen at Buckingham Palace.
And as for free train travel for Eddie in the future?
In recognition of his long service, colleagues gathered to say goodbye. And as Eddie thanked them for their friendship and kindness over the years, the fondness felt for him by many was plain to see.
Eddie now says he plans to fill his spare time doing voluntary work. But only after he'd dispatched his last ever train from the platform. On time of course.
