Service men and women of all generations are taking part in a parade in Leicester today ahead of Armed Forces Day next weekend. The event is being held to celebrate and raise awareness of the past and continuing role of the military.

Nottingham is hosting the national celebrations on Saturday 29th June 2013.

The UK Armed Forces defend the UK and its interests all around the world, delivering aid, promoting peace, tackling drug smugglers, fighting terrorism and providing security. Currently, the main UK military effort is in Afghanistan.

Next weekend's celebrations aim to raise awareness of the contribution made to our country by those who serve and have served in Her Majesty's Armed Forces. It also gives the nation an opportunity to show support for those who make up the Armed Forces community.
