Support package helps former Remploy workers into employment

Twenty-four sites were closed in August as part of government cut backs, including factories in Worksop and Chesterfield Credit: PA

Hundreds of former Remploy workers have found other jobs or are in training after taking up a Government employment support package, ministers have said.

More than 200 disabled people who used to work at the factories have found work and 240 are being retrained.

The factories closed after the Government decided to spend money on helping disabled workers into mainstream employment.

Sites in North Staffordshire, Leicester and Worksop were among 27 across the UK that closed last year.

Around 500 ex-workers affected by the closures either decided to retire or did not take up the offer of the employment support package, according to the Department for Work and Pensions.
