Grandfather and grandsons rescued from quicksand in Rhyl

A grandfather and two young grandsons from Staffordshire were rescued from quicksand near the Rhyl harbour entrance yesterday afternoon by coastguards using a special sled.

The grandfather dialled 999 on his mobile because he became worried when they were stuck up to their knees.

Police tried to get to them but were getting stuck themselves. A coastguard took his sled to the trio and they were ferried to hard sand one by one, helped by the crew of the town’s inshore lifeboat.

The grandfather, aged 58, and boys of seven and five, from the Potteries, were cold and wet and were taken aboard the lifeboat to the RNLI boathouse, where they were cleaned and checked. They were unharmed.
