Stone has been cycling since the age of 8 and as part of the British team since 1995. His international debut was made in the 1996 World Championships in Nottingham.

Stone took a break from cycling in 2000 but returned to the national team in 2004. Within a year he became double European Champion in the Road Race and Time Trial.

Stone's greatest achievement so far was his double gold win in the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing, for which he received an MBE in 2010. In the London 2012 time trial Stone won bronze. Stone has cerebral palsy.
