A Nottingham park will be invaded by an army of mini Caped Crusaders today to celebrate its role in the new Batman movie.

The city council is holding a Superhero Family Picnic in the grounds of Wollaton Hall, which featured in a number of scenes in "The Dark Knight Rises".

It's the first of a number of events planned at the 16th century mansion which appears on screen as Wayne Manor, the home of Batman's alter ego Bruce Wayne.

ITV Central broke the news that the Hall was to be used as a filming location in June last year. Within hours, it was being talked about by movie fans across the world.

The film's stars Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freemen joined the five-hundred strong crew on site, while some fortunate Nottingham residents got the chance to be extras.

The city council hopes excitement around the film's release and its Nottingham connection will draw more visitors to Wollaton.

Today, families are being encouraged to come along to the park dressed as Batman or their favourite superhero. There will also be Batman trails inside and outside the Hall and a chance for youngsters to have their photo taken with the Caped Crusader.

The Superhero Picnic will take place from 12pm - 3pm.

Councillor David Trimble, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said: "This picnic is the start of a number of activities planned to celebrate Wollaton's starring role in the Batman film. It is such a fantastic opportunity to showcase one of our must-see destinations in the city and we hope everyone joins in the fun at the Superhero picnic."

"The Dark Knight Rises" is the final part of a trilogy of Batman movies by director Christopher Nolan.

One of the biggest Hollywood blockbusters ever filmed in the Midlands, it has already grossed £450m worldwide since its release on July 20th.
