Nottingham Trent University will establish a colony of 10,000 bees in order to try and improve the environment and reverse dwindling bee population numbers.

A hive has been established on the roof of the Newton building. The university claims if the move is successful they could increase the number of bees to as much as 60,000.

The university will install a 'bee cam' which they say will allow people to see what goes on inside the hive.

The honey bee population is under threat. It is thought this is due to changes in farming practices, disease and a lack of nutrition through climate change and destruction of their habitats.

Earlier this month, a 25,000 bee colony was established on a hotel in Broad Street, Birmingham.
