Leek roundabout protesters want a public inquiry
Campaigners who failed to save a roundabout in Leek are heading to London to ask the Government for a public inquiry.
Staffordshire County Council have removed the roundabout as part of a £5 million redevelopment of the town centre.
The campaigners started a sit-in protest over a month ago when the council tried to start work on improving the road system.
A community website set up a live webcam so that people could watch the progress of the work.
After several weeks, the Conservative-led authority went to Stoke-on-Trent County Court to obtain a possession order, which enabled Staffordshire County Council to evict the protestors.
Now they have been forced to move on and the roundabout has been demolished, the campaign group are meeting local transport minister Norman Baker in Westminster today to try and force a public inquiry.
As well as remove the roundabout the Council want to remove two zebra crossings which the campaigners say will make the roads more dangerous.
The council say that due to a new Sainsburys being built on the edge of the town, the work is needed to ease the extra traffic that will be created.
