Kingsthorpe chapel restoration complete

The restoration of the Victorian chapel in Kingsthorpe cemetery in Northampton is now complete.

The chapel is one of two that are being restored as part of Northampton Borough Council’s ongoing programme of works to safeguard the town’s architectural assets.

Work to restore the chapels, which both date from between 1883 and 1900, began earlier this year. Work included minor outside repairs, internal decoration and restoration of period floorings.

Colourful Victorian clay tiles in Kingsthorpe chapel had been severely damaged by ground moisture and the flooring has now been restored to its original glory.

Research has also been carried out on the tiles and it is believed they are from designs by the great British architect Augustus Pugin (1812-1852) who is remembered for his passion for reviving the medieval gothic style of architecture.

As well as many church designs, Pugin also worked on the designs for the interiors of the Houses of Parliament and the Big Ben clock tower.

Towcester Road cemetery chapel is due to be completed next week.
