Mick McCarthy for Villa?

There's speculation tonight that Mick McCarthy is the favourite candidate for the Villa boss job, following McLeish's sacking yesterday.

Sports Correspondent Steve Clamp gives his reaction to the suggestion that McCarthy could take over at Villa Park:

Villa say they want someone young and enthusiastic to replace Alex McLeish - yet the bookies favourite is all of a sudden Mick McCarthy!

I'm not saying he isn't enthusiastic but he's not what you might regard as one of the 'new' breed of coaches.

Bookies say a 'flurry' of bets started being placed on him on Tuesday afternoon, hence the cut in the 53 year old's odds to 2/1.

Will the former Wolves boss take charge at Villa?

I've not spoken to anyone yet who thinks he is the ideal candidate, but with odds being cut maybe someone knows something.

And let's face it, his appointment surely wouldn't go down as badly with fans as that of his predecessor Alex McLeish.
