Eleven athletes from Calendar region taking part in Special Olympics

The Special Olympics are under way in Abu Dhabi, after Sheffield passed the baton on after hosting the World Games in 2017.

The week-long event is for competitors with intellectual and physical disabilities, including 11 from our region.

WATCH: Two members of Haworth Riding for the Disabled heading out to Special Olympics

Six years ago, James Reed-Griffiths first walked through the stable doors of Haworth Riding for the Disabled.

Now he and stablemate T-Jay Wilson will be representing Great Britain at the Special Olympics.

Laura Butterfield, the centre's head coach, said it was "amazing" to have two of their members represented on the world stage.

"When we got told, we all had tears in our eyes," she said: "We couldn't believe it, we were so happy."
