Services are taking place across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire to mark 100 years since the Battle of the Somme. Thousands of men in the Pals battalions lost their lives in what became the deadliest battle in the First World War.

Bell tolls at Bradford Cathedral

A single bell has tolled at Bradford Cathedral at the exact time one hundred years ago that the Battle of the Somme began.

The bell chimed for five minutes followed by ten minutes of silence and then a further ten minutes of prayer led by the Dean to remember all those who lost their lives.

The service ran simultaneously with two others at Ripon and Wakefield Cathedral.
