Hundreds of steelworkers are staging a protest march through Scunthorpe. Nine hundred jobs are under threat at the Tata steel plant there and workers, union officials and MP's are walking through the town to the Civic Centre. They will then present a petition signed by 5,000 people calling on the local authority to cut the £15 million fifteen annual rates bill faced by the company.
There are hopes that the jobs could be saved in the UK steel industry with potential sale of Scunthorpe-based business.
