Fire prisoner found and admitted to hospital

West Yorkshire Police have confirmed that Shakeil Shazad was admitted to hospital in Staffordshire last night.

He was jailed for manslaughter after a fire at a house in Birkby, Huddersfield in 2002, which killed three generations of the same family.

The 33-year-old was found in a confused state on a road and was later admitted to hospital.

At the time he was unable to provide his personal details, but officers confirmed his identity through a finger print test.

He is now being guarded by West Yorkshire officers who have been working with colleagues in Derbyshire.

We have now confirmed through finger print checks that a man taken to hospital yesterday evening is Shakeil Shazad and he remains under guard by West Yorkshire Police detectives.

He will be now be fully assessed for his physical and mental health. Arrangements will also be made to return him to custody in due course.

I hope that the swift recapture will bring some comfort to the Chisti family and I want to thank members of the media for their assistance in publicising our efforts to find himand also colleagues in Derbyshire and Staffordshire police.

Enquires to locate outstanding murder suspect Shahid Mohammed remain a top priority for West Yorkshire Police and will continue until he is found.
