Yorkshire Bowls Championships - Records tumble to 16-year-old from Scarborough

Jack Bird

One of Scarborough Bowls Club’s youngest members, sixteen-year-old Jack Bird, achieved several records after winning two regional trophies on the same day.

During the competition, at New Earswick Bowls Club in York, Jack won the Yorkshire regional under 25’s Men’s Singles competition.

Taking his form into the afternoon session, Jack went on to beat Nick Scott, of Ryedale Bowls Club, in the Yorkshire County IBA Men’s Singles Championship final. This competition is open to men of all ages and Jack managed a 21 - 11 victory.

In achieving this double win Jack has entered the record books as the only bowler to have won both of these County Championships in the same year, the youngest person to have won the Yorkshire Men’s Singles Championship, and the youngest person to have won the Under 25’s Championship.

Mike Preston, the Head Coach of the Junior Section said, “Jack has been a popular bowler with us since he was just seven years old and our members are delighted with Jack’s fantastic achievement at just sixteen years old.

"One day we hope to see him become a World Champion."
