Inquest opens into deaths of Sheffield house fire victims

The inquest into the deaths of five people, including three children, in a house fire in Sheffield continues today.

Adyan Parwais Kayani, 9, his brother Amann, 7, and their nine week old sister Minahil died along with their aunt Anum Pawaiz and grandmother Shabina Begum in the fire in August last year.

Three generations of the Kayani family, including a nine-week-old baby, brothers Adhyan Parwaiz Kayani, 9 and Amaan Parwaiz Kayani, 7, their 20-year-old aunt and their grandmother, were killed when the blaze broke out in Wake Road.

The parents of three children killed in a fire in Sheffield exactly one year ago went back there today to help plant a tree outside their former home in their memory.

Prayers were said ahead of the ceremony at Wake Road in Nether Edge where two brothers, aged nine and seven, and their nine-week-old sister perished alongside their grandmother and aunt. The blaze is believed to have been caused by a faulty phone charger.

For many family members it was the first time they'd been back to the street since the tragedy.

A nine-week-old baby girl and two other children aged nine and seven were among the victims of the fire in the Sharrow area of Sheffield.

Shabina Begum, 54, and her 20-year-old daughter Anum Parvaiz also died.

Police and fire officers investigating the cause of the blaze said it was probably caused by an electrical fault involving a faulty charger.

Trading Standards suggest the following advice for consumers when buying a charger:

• Always look out for the manufacturers or importer's brand name/logo and their address
• A model and batch number should either be on the charger itself or on the packaging
• Warnings and instructions for use should be provided

• Check that there is at least 9.5mm between the edge of the pins and the edge of the charger
• Ask for a receipt so that the purchase can be traced back if there is a problem
• Check that the output voltage and current ratings marked on the charge and your electrical device are the same

• Don't mix chargers - always use the right charger for each device
• Do not leave on charge overnight

If you think you have purchased an unsafe or counterfeit charger stop using it immediately and report it to Trading Standards by contacting the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 08454 04 05 06.

A Sheffield house fire that killed three generations of the same family was most probably caused by a faulty charger, police have said.

South Yorkshire Police said in a statement: "Following a joint investigation, South Yorkshire Police and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have found that the most probable cause of the fatal house fire in Wake Road, Nether Edge, Sheffield, was an electrical fault involving a faulty charging device.

"However, the investigation continues on behalf of the coroner, and a full inquest into the deaths of the three children and two women will take place at a future date."

More than 5,000 people paid their respects today at the funeral of five members of the same family who were killed in a fire in Sheffield.
