Big clear-up after storms batter parts of region

The clean up operation has begun in Hull today after residents said a mini tornado swept through part of the city yesterday afternoon.

Trees were uprooted along Hopewell Road and one woman is in hospital after being hit by glass as a tree fell on the taxi she was trying to get in to. The council say it will take until the end of the week to clear the debris.

Eyewitnesses have been telling Calendar how a 'mini tornado' swept down a residential street in Hull, causing damage to cars and houses.

The woman passenger in this taxi had a lucky escape when a tree fell on the taxi she was in. Eyewitnesses say she was shocked but otherwise unhurt.

Homeowners and businesses have been mopping up today after flash floods hit the region last night. At the Prince of Wales Hospice in Pontefract volunteers rallied round to help clear up the mess. Chris Kiddey reports

On Pasture Lane at Clayton in Bradford the emergency services were called to help rescue the occupants of a car which became stuck in deep floodwater. Jackie Casagranda lives nearby.

Flash flooding hit parts of the country were hit with heavy rain while further wet and windy weather is forecast for tomorrow when the remnants of Hurricane Bertha are expected to hit the UK.

Forecasters said that currently, southern parts of the country are most at risk from "heavy rainfall, strong coastal winds and large waves", followed by areas of north east Scotland on Monday. But there is also the possibility that the depression could move across northern France

Residents evacuated from their homes in the Lincolnshire town of Louth, while downpours also led to waterlogged roads in Maidstone, Kent. The Environment Agency has a flood alert in place along Louth Canal and Waithe Beck while there is a flood warning for properties near the Louth Canal from Keddington to High Bridge.

This morning the clear up will begin in earnest after heavy rain cause flash flooding across the region.

Areas of West and South Yorkshire battled back rising water with fire services receiving several hundred calls in just a few hours.

Water had to be pumped out of Bradford Royal Infirmary's A&E department while the kitchens at the Prince of Wales Hospice in Pontefract have been damaged.

The fire service says it's received one hundred and sixty emergency calls.

Castleford is one of the areas worst affected. Torrential rain causing car parks and streets to look more like rivers.

Several roads have been closed - with some vehicles submerged. Elsewhere part of Bradford hospital's A&E department had to be pumped out, and the Prince of Wales hospice in Pontefract has been unable to keep the flood waters at bay.
