Sochi silver for Lincoln's skier Jade Etherington

She may have landed back in the UK this week, but Paralympic star Jade Etherington is still riding high on her success.

Jade and her skiing guide Caroline Powell took home four medals at the Sochi winter Paralympics, making her GB's biggest ever winner at the games.

Lincoln's record-breaking skierJade Etherington, battled through the pain barrier to carry the flag at the closing ceremony of the Winter Paralympics in Sochi - but admitted her future in the sport was uncertain.

The proud 23-year-old refused to let illness deny her the chance to lead the team into the Fisht Stadium on Sunday night after it forced her out of her final race.

The athlete was laid low with an ovarian cyst rupture on Saturday night and spent much of the following day in a wheelchair due to the intense pain before managing to walk at the night's parade. She said:

"I am so honoured. I felt better in the evening for the ceremony, but I was taking pain killers. I was in a wheelchair for most of the day, but I knew I needed to stand to lift the flag."

There were great hopes that visually-impaired Jade and her guide Caroline Powell would have gone on the win a record-breaking fifth medal - and potentially their first gold -in the giant slalom. But Jade was ill last night and still felt unwell this morning.

However, she has been named as Great Britain's flag bearer for tonight's closing ceremony - illness permitting. A decision on her involvement in the ceremony at the Fisht Stadium will be made later.

Etherington said: "Looking back we haven't skied as well as that ever, it was one of our best runs and we pulled back a couple of seconds.

"It was tough, it hurt all the way down. We are really annoyed not to get the gold and it was so close again to Frantceva but we got a medal and we will continue fighting.

"It is crazy, especially as this is my first ever Paralympics and we have had such a bumpy season.

"We only started skiing in August, I broke my ankle and we have had illness, money concerns and everything like that, working out what races to go to to get qualified.

"Hopefully everyone can see from the time that we did fight for it, we didn't just come down to get the silver and we did GB proud."

Powell added: "Jade has definitely reached her peak. Together we have formed a great bond.

"There is great communication between us, it has worked so well throughout the season and we have peaked at the right time.

"We have managed to get four medals and we are so happy with that. We are obviously devastated not to get the gold, but we can't do anything about that."

Lincoln's Jade Etherington has been congratulated in Parliament this morning, after winning her third medal in the Winter Paralympics earlier today.

She took a silver in the visually impaired slalom, to add to her silver in the downhill and bronze in the Super G.
