UK Coal have been fined a total of £250,000 at Leeds Crown Court.

The company, which is currently in administration, was fined £200,000 for health and safety failings following the death of employee Gerry Gibson in September 2011.

Mr. Gibson died following a roof collapse at Kellingley colliery. A second miner survived the incident, needing treatment for minor injuries.

There had been a similar collapse at the site 6 days prior to the fatality, but the company failed to take adequate measures to prevent the second incident.

The company was also fined £50,000 for an explosion in November 2010, causing 200 miners to be evacuated, and the mine closing for three weeks.
