A man has been arrested in connection with the IRA murders of two teenage soldiers in Northern Ireland 36 years ago.

19 year old Pt Michael Harrison was killed in a gun attack in Belfast 36 years ago. A man has been arrested over the murder today.

The pair were both privates in the Light Infantry. Harrison was from the town of Dinnington in South Yorkshire while Private Turnbull hailed from North Yorkshire.

18 year old Pt Richard Turnbull also died in a gun attack in Belfast.

They were just two days into a four month tour of duty in Northern Ireland when they were killed in a hail of bullets as the army patrol they were travelling in turned into the path of the waiting ambush.

The 54-year-old suspect is being questioned about the gun attack in Belfast that killed Michael Harrison. 19, and Richard Turnbull, 18. who were both from Yorkhire.

Man held over IRA murder of Yorkshire soldiers

A man has been arrested in connection with the IRA murders of two teenage soldiers from Yorkshire in Northern Ireland 36 years ago.

The 54-year-old suspect will be questioned about the gun attack on army vehicles in Belfast that killed 19-year-old Michael Harrison and 18-year-old Richard Turnbull, who were both privates serving with the Light Infantry.

The ambush on North Howard Street in June 1977 left two other military personnel injured.

The arrested man was detained in west Belfast by officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland's serious crime branch. He has been taken to Antrim police station for questioning.
