Ex-South Yorkshire PCs accused of historic sex offences in Rotherham

A retired police officer has been arrested on suspicion of child sexual abuse dating back to the 1990s.

The former South Yorkshire PC, who is now in his 60s, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted rape and three counts of indecent assault against two girls between 1995 and 1999. He is also accused of misconduct in a public office.

The man is one of two former officers from the force arrested on suspicion of non-recent sexual offences.

Another ex-PC, aged in his 50s, is accused of indecent assault over an incident between 1995 and 1996, as well as misconduct in a public office.

South Yorkshire Police say the officers were on duty when the alleged offences took place.

Both men have been bailed as the investigation continues.

Assistant Chief Constable Hayley Barnett said: "Our first priority in this case, and always, is the victims and survivors.

"Since the publication of the Jay Report 10 years ago, we have built a much deeper understanding of child sexual abuse and exploitation and will ensure anyone reporting such crimes is treated with sensitivity, compassion and respect.

"It is never too late to report if you are a victim or survivor of child sexual abuse and exploitation."

The Jay Report was an independent inquiry into child sexual exploitation in Rotherham.

It found at least 1,400 underage girls, some as young as 11, had been abused between 1997 and 2013.

The force has made a self-referral to the IOPC , Independent Office for Police Conduct, in connection with the allegations.
