A pair of suspected whisky thieves have been stopped in their tracks by police in West Yorkshire who used a stinger to bring a lorry to a halt.

Two men have been arrested and remain in custody after officers were forced to close the M606 near Bradford as they deployed a stinger to stop and search a lorry that failed to stop.

When they opened the doors of the HGV they found an estimated £70,000 of Johnny Cree whisky, believed to be stolen.

The lorry is thought to have been cloned and failed to stop on the northbound carriageway of the M606.

It was stopped at 7:50am on Saturday 14 December as part of Operation Limit, the national drink and drug drive campaign.

The northbound M606 was briefly closed as a safety procedure while officers dealt with the incident, but has since reopened.
