Hull man jailed after strangling girlfriend after accusing her of an affair
A jealous bully who suddenly strangled his girlfriend from behind after angrily accusing her of cheating on him during a "toxic" relationship has been jailed. Anthony Plows grabbed the woman around her throat in a "chokehold" during the confrontation. He had frequently used violence towards her during their "awful" relationship and she branded him a "nasty" person, Hull Crown Court heard.Plows, 34, of Hull, but recently in custody on remand, admitted an offence of intentional strangulation on July 15.Oliver Shipley, prosecuting, said that Plows was in a relationship with the woman for about six years and she described it as on-off and "awful and violent". She was at a friend's house when she woke up to hear Plows shouting outside.Plows accused the woman of cheating on him with her friend. He was with her dog, which he had been looking after for a few days. She shouted that she wanted the dog back.She later heard Plows screaming in the distance and he later turned up unannounced at her home, shouting outside but without the dog. She asked where the dog was. He said that he had left it with a friend.Plows gave her the dog back and she left it at her friend's home. But she later saw Plows with the dog again.Plows later suddenly walked over to the woman and grabbed her around the throat from behind in a "chokehold". It lasted a few seconds but she did not lose consciousness. He was arrested on July 21.The woman later said that Plows had hurt her emotionally and physically so many times. "He never learns," she said. "He is a nasty person. He has a negative impact on my mental health."Plows had convictions for 36 previous offences between 2008 and last year, including three of assault and others of harassment, threatening behaviour, theft and breaching a domestic violence protection order, involving the same woman.Plows had no fixed address because he was often released from short prison sentences with nowhere to go. He appeared in court via a video link from Hull Prison.He was jailed for 18 months.
