Man arrested after van 'driven at young children playing football' in Huddersfield

A man has been arrested after a van was allegedly driven towards a group of children playing football.

Police were called to Kirkheaton, Huddersfield, after it was reported that a van had been driven onto a playing field just off St John's Avenue.

The incident happened just before 6pm on Friday when a small group of children aged eight and nine were playing football on the field.

Witnesses said they heard screaming and saw a van leaving the road and then travelling towards a group of children before it came to a stop.

A man allegedly got out of the van and shouted at the children before driving away. No-one was hurt.

West Yorkshire Police confirmed that a 34-year-old man had been arrested.

In a statement, the force said: "Police are investigating an incident on a playing field off St John’s Avenue, Kirkheaton, Huddersfield, shortly after 6pm on Friday, 7 July.

"It is reported that a van has driven towards a group of children, stopping a short distance away. The male driver got out of the vehicle and shouted at the group before driving off. No-one was hurt in the incident.

"A 34-year-old man has been arrested and released under investigation."
