Two dead after helicopter crashes into field in Burton in Lonsdale

Two people have died after a helicopter crashed into a field in North Yorkshire.

Emergency services were called to the incident, off Bentham Road near Burton in Lonsdale, close to the Lancashire border, shortly before midday on Monday, 20 June.

People were advised to avoid the area.

On Monday afternoon a spokesperson confirmed that the incident was fatal.

They said: "Two people were sadly killed as a result of the crash. Their families are being supported by specially trained officers."

It is thought the two people who died were the only ones on the aircraft.

A full road closure is in place at the A65 and at the junction of Bentham Moor Road.

Thomas Beresford, who was at the scene, said there were dozens of emergency services vehicles in attendance.

He filmed an air ambulance taking off from the site.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has been informed.

A spokesperson said: "We have been notified of an accident near Burton in Lonsdale, North Yorkshire involving a light helicopter.

"An investigation has been launched and a team of inspectors are travelling to the accident site to begin making enquiries."

Police thanked local residents for their co-operation.
