A Stagecoach school bus with around 60 children onboard has crashed into a ditch in North Hykeham near Lincoln, but police say there are no serious injuries reported.

Lincolnshire Police say they were called to Meadow Lane at 8.29am this morning.

A 12 year old boy suffered a broken arm in the crash and has been taken to hospital.

A 14 year old girl was also taken to hospital as a precaution.

Pictures show the double decker bus tilted on its side in a ditch by the side of the road.

The force tweeted: "We are on scene at Meadow Lane, North Hykeham following reports of an overturned school bus. Thankfully there are no serious injuries reported."

A separate tweet added: "We ask that any parents/guardians understandably concerned do not attend the scene and instead go to St. Christopher's School on Hykeham Road which will be used as a rendezvous point."

Meadow Lane was closed while emergency services dealt with the crash before it reopened about an hour later.

It was later closed again as engineers began to recover the stricken vehicle.

It is understood the bus was taking pupils to two local secondary schools - the Sir Robert Pattison Academy and the North Kesteven Academy.

In a statement, Robert Pattison Academy said: “Members of the school's senior team - including the headteacher - rushed to the scene as soon as we were notified of the accident and helped with the efforts by the emergency services to support the children involved."

"Thankfully there were no serious injuries, though one pupil suffered a broken arm. We swiftly contacted parents and made the necessary arrangements for them to collect their children from a designated collection point.

"In due course we will be having discussions with the transport provider to ensure all efforts are being made to understand the circumstances in which this accident happened and how it can be avoided in the future."

Ambulance crews were called to the scene at 8.28am this morning.

In a statement East Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “The caller reported that there had been a road traffic collision. We sent two paramedics in fast response cars, three LIVES community first responders and three double-crewed ambulances. The police were also on scene.

“Currently, two patients have been taken to Lincoln County Hospital via double-crewed ambulances and we are currently still on scene.”

A spokesperson for Stagecoach East Midlands said its thoughts were with the children involved in the crash and it is giving the police its "full support" in investigating the incident.
