A Sheffield man accidentally burnt down his flat during a romantic marriage proposal that went horribly wrong.

Firefighters rushed to Abbeydale Road in Sheffield last night at 8.30pm to reports of a first floor flat fire caused by hundreds of tea lights.

After talking with the tenants of the property, firefighters quickly discovered the blaze began as a result of a marriage proposal that went disastrously wrong.

The man was preparing to pop the question and had only gone to collect his girlfriend for the big moment but when he returned his flat was engulfed in flames.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said in a social media post: "Balloons were up and wine glasses were at the ready. Firefighters found hundreds of burnt out tea lights.''

"However, after going round the corner to collect his fiancé-to-be, ready for the romantic moment, he came back to find the flat on fire and three fire engines on the way!

"Fortunately this was dealt with quickly by our crews and nobody was injured. The best news? She still said YES!"

The fire service warned that the blaze could have had graver consequences and urged others to be careful when lighting candles.

They said: "Extinguish them properly when you've done, don't put them near flammable items, like curtains [and] don't leave 100s of tea lights unattended."

They then cheekily decided to ask for an invite to the upcoming nuptials. "And that's all, folks," The fire service added. "What remains for us to say is all the best to the happy couple - we await our wedding invite!"
